There are a number of tent peg styles on the market on which ones to choose is based on cost, weight and the tent and ground you will be using.
Tent Peg Materials
Steel – the most common material for pegs which is cost effective and strong. However can get heavy if using long or wide pegs Aluminium – Popular with hikers and lightweight campers as they are much lighter than steel without much loss in strength Titanium – specialist super lightweight material for hikers and expeditions Plastic – Extra strength plastic used in chunkier heavy duty pegs to keep weight and cost down
Style of Peg
Wire/Pin – traditional round smooth tube style pegs with a hook tip. Suitable for general use and most commonly found supplied with tents
Skewer - an improvement on wire pin pegs with an addition of a skewer style imprint on the shaft of the peg to assist in grip in the ground
V/Ripple – Usually a rectangular piece of material which has been folded to create a v shape which increase the surface area in the ground adding stability in high winds but increasing weight.
Mushroom /Ground – used to secure ground sheets and floors to the ground without causing trips or toe stubbing. Made with flat metal coil or plastic mushroom style head
Rock – Made from hardened steel like masonry nails which allows them to be used in hard or rocky ground – bring the peg mallet!
Power/Plastic – These pegs are lighter but are generally the largest size of peg giving high stability to awnings and family stand up tents.
