Camping Toilet Lowdown

For many one of the low points of camping is walking through the dark in the rain in someone else’s shoes.

For many one of the low points of camping is walking through the dark in the rain in someone else’s shoes.  How we jealously stared at the caravanners with their onboard toilets but now we can get a taste of that home comfort. Camping toilets have been growing in popularity especially with families with young children. There are quite a few brands and styles to choose from so we’ve created this guide to give you the lowdown on what’s on offer.

Disposable UrinalDisposable Urinals/Toilets

The most basic form of relief comes in the form of disposable bags which can contain powder which turns liquids to a no smell gel.  With the urinals, such as Traveljohns, you simply hold it and wee in or alternatively hover! Gelert offer a more advanced version which also includes a bucket style seat which holds the pouch for you. Great for occasional use such as festivals and long journeys.

Kampa KhaziBucket Style

Back in the day these were the staple inclusion in many caravans and now more compact and portable versions have been created for the camping market. These are simply a bucket with a toilet seat fitted around the top. They also come with lids to cover when not in use and can optionally be filled with toilet fluid to break down the contents and stop bad smells. A great budget option and by keeping it nice and simple they are very easy to clean and maintain. Two popular options are the Kampa Khazi and the Crusader Luggable Loo.

Flushing Camping Toilets

The deluxe models in the camping world, these babies are made to do everything your trusty loo can do at home.  You get a separate compartment which stores the contents away and can be sealed with a knob on the top. They also have flushing action which uses either water of flushing fluid. You use toilet fluid which breaks down the contents and keeps it smelling clean and fresh! There are various sizes available which are usually measured in litres – larger options are usually higher so they feel more like normal loos when you sit on them! Be aware because of the extra parts they can be harder to maintain and empty and so we would recommend them for longer holidays.
